What is NLP?

There may just be as many definitions of NLP as there are NLP trainers. Many view NLP as a series of techniques and it certainly is that. However, NLP is so much more than that. To really understand the basics of NLP, let’s start with the name. Neuro means “of the brain.” Linguistic pertains to language and speech. And programming refers to the thoughts and behaviors programmed into our minds. Mind, language, patterns. That being said, my favorite definition is one coined by Richard Bandler, the co-creator of NLP. He defines NLP as “an attitude and methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques.” It’s the attitude and approach that make the techniques so powerful and successful. The attitude is that of curiosity, wanting to know what is going on inside of something. What is it that makes this engine work? What is it that makes this human being work? Next is how to approach things, with a willingness to experiment, to find answers to these kinds of questions. Bandler calls it “wanton experimentation.” a willingness to try something new to see if it’s going to work and a willingness to keep trying something new until something does work. In summary, NLP is a method for understanding how the language of our mind generates and runs the patterns we have in life. Once we understand, then we can apply a variety of NLP techniques to enhance, change or shift our patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior.
